Heesun and I met at the 2016 Adoption Conference, where I was invited to attend by my cousin Catherine. Catherine, a San Francisco resident, was coordinating most of the event remotely. "I noticed you follow her on Facebook. The conference is going to be a bunch of adoption academics and nerds... but you should come and check out her performance!" she said.
Done and done, dear Catherine. Reunions are by and far one of my favorite parts of life, so a personal invitation to a live set by Heesun was really just icing on top of the cake. Attending was a no-brainer.
How this ties into my mission:
Heesun is as cross-cultural as they come, and her sound – raw, gritty, hard – is capable of transcending racial boundaries.
The first thing I said to Heesun upon our meeting was: I love what you do and what you stand for. I felt it was important to recognize that. She's a Christian, she's a mom, she's a wife, she's a rapper...and she is a she. I can only imagine how friendly the rap game is to females.
Our journeys and callings must be validated and encouraged along the way. We are all in this together, building one another up.
